English: The Great Eastern Steam Ship Designed by I.K. Brunel Esqr. F.R.S. Built by Messrs Scott Russell London Weight of Iron used in the construction 10000 tons Gas laid to all parts of the ship & electric light to the mast headThe 'Great Eastern' was built at John Scott Russell's yard in Millwall. The sheer size of the ship meant that her components would be extraordinarily large. The screw engines, for example, weighed over 500 tons. Gas pipes were laid to all parts of the ship and electricity lit the entire vessel.
