- Hey all, I know there's no definite precedent for 'baile sean tí' for 'shanty town' in Irish but since the etymology of 'shanty' in English is 'sean tí' thought this term would be more appropriate. Any thoughts? Úsáideoir:Chaco 24 Eanáir 2010

Well, not going to lose much sleep if it's changed to 'sluma' :-) but just like to highlight that there is a significant semantic difference between a 'slum' and a 'shanty town.' But since no equivalent word for 'shanty town' exists in Irish, I'd argue that the word should be borrowed directly from English.....And since it probably came into English through Irish (or Hiberno-English), I see no reason why it shouldn't be reclaimed into its original form. - Well, Chaco - I think that we should use terms that can be verified using the usual authorities. So the title of thwe article should be the word that is used and recognised as Gaeilge. É sin ráite, it might be interesting to have this information about Baile sean tí as the possible basis for the word in English. Suimiúil go bhfuil sé le fáil sna foinsí luaite agatsa, Éog, b'fhéidir gur fiú an t-eolas seo a chur ann chomh maith.
