Patent Nonsense Guideline cuir in eagar

(Illustrative Google Translate of this page to highlight issue)

Background cuir in eagar

I am officially declaring shenanigans against copy and paste jobs from Google Translate. It's great that Google added an Ghaeilge to the tool, but it means we're getting more of this type of nonsense (which is a verbatim copy and paste from the auto translate tool). I just don't think it's good enough for even basic stubs to be created in this way. If someone doesn't have enough Irish to create an article or stub, they should use the established process via the request new page form.

While it's great that people are submitting stuff, it takes a lot of time from other editors to make these pages even passable. If we had thousands of editors that'd might be OK, but we don't. And the main problem with this is that the pages created in this way are often/primarily created by cross-wiki subject evangelists, and often represent niche topics. And so the few established editors we do have end up spending their time tidying up garbage on low-interest or NN topics, instead of improving/expanding/contributing to higher value articles.

Anyway, if others agree, I would like to (in a lightweight way) enshrine the "We don't like Google Translate stubs" as an established guideline. Either as part of the Cabhair:Tús a chur le leathanach nua guideline. Or as a standalone - similar to the Wikipedia:Patent nonsense deletion guideline on the EN project. (Maybe even with a link to Panu's Grammar Hints essay.)

Before I do anything however I want to build some kind of CON.

CON building questions for other editors cuir in eagar

  • Do we agree that garbage from Google Translate should be deleted/removed on sight? (Or do we think that it should just be tagged or somehow worked eventually by native speakers).
  • If we think it should be deleted/removed on sight, we probably need an official guideline to reference for such deletions/removals. Do we think 4 lines at the bottom of the existing Cabhair:Tús a chur le leathanach nua guideline is enough? Or do we want a separate guideline?
  • If we think it should be tagged/worked by established editors, do we think there should be a process/work queue for this? Probably some kind of subset of the {{glanadh}} process(?)
  • And finally, do we think either the tags/guideline pages should be in multiple languages (at least EN and GA) so that the non-Irish speakers submitting this nonsense will understand the guideline we are pointing them to?
