Is rannán de theaghlach é cenél^[1] (Nua-Ghaeilge: cineál), go háirithe de theaghlach Gaelach.^[2] Úsáidtear an téarma seo in Albain agus in Éirinn, ina bhféadfaí é a aistriú mar “sliocht” nó “síol”, srl.^[3] (mar shampla, “sliocht Néill Naoighiallaigh”).
