Rugadh Hall in Solihull, Warwickshire, Sasana, agus tháinig sé chun na hAstráile tar éis an Dara Cogadh Domhanda. Chuir an teaghlach fúthu in Brisbane, áit a raibh gaolta lena mháthair ina gcónaí. Cuireadh oideachas air in Brisbane Boys’ College, ach d’fhág sé nuair a bhí sé sé bliana déag agus chuaigh ag obair mar mhionchléireach.

Bhí suim mhór aige i gceol, agus chuir sé aithne ar John Manifold, ceoltóir, scríbhneoir agus béaloideasaí. Chuaigh sin i bhfeidhm air i gcúrsaí litríochta, cultúir agus polaitíochta, agus chuir Manifold in aithne do roinnt scríbhneoirí iomráiteacha é. Orthu sin bhí an scríbhneoir Bundúchasach Kath Walker (Oodgeroo Noonuccal), duine ba chúis le hé a bheith páirteach san fheachtas ar son cearta Bundúchasacha.[1]

Sna 1960idí chuaigh Hall i gceann Céim Baitsiléara (le ceol mar mórábhar) in Ollscoil Queensland. Bhuail sé le Judith Wright, bean a raibh buanchaidreamh aici uirthi de thoradh na suime a bhí acu araon i gcearta Bundúchasacha, cúrsaí timpeallachta agus filíocht.[1]

Sna 1960idí a thosaigh sé ag obair mar shaorscríbhneoir agus mar leirmheastóir leabhar agus scannán. Scríobh sé roinnt mhaith scripteanna don Australian Broadcasting Commission agus bhíodh sé ag obair mar aisteoir. Idir 1967 agus 1978 bhí sé ina eagarthóir filíochta ar The Australian.[2] Thosaigh sé ag foilsiú filíochta sna 1970idí agus tá ceithre úrscéal déag foilsithe aige. Idir 1991 agus 1994 bhí sé ina chathaoirleach ar Chomhairle na hAstráile.[3]

Tá sé ina chónaí in Victoria. Ceapadh é mar bhall d’Ord na hAstráile in 1990 as “service to the Arts, particularly in the field of literature".[4]

Ba é comhbhunaitheoir an Australian Summer School of Early Music in Canberra.
