Rugadh Montague in Brooklyn, Nua-Eabhrac i Meiriceá sa bhliain 1929. Nuair a bhí sé ceithre bliana d'aois cuireadh ar ais go hÉirinn é go dtí gaolta leis. Tógadh i nGarbhachadh, Tír Eoghain é ansin. Scríobh sé go minic faoi Chúige Uladh agus faoin gcultúr Gaelach.[2]

Chaith sé seal ag léachtóireacht i gColáiste na hOllscoile, Corcaigh. Scríobh sé i mBéarla ach bhí an-suim aige i litríocht na Fraince freisin. Fuair sé bás in Nice i nDeisceart na Fraince ar 10 Nollaig 2016.
