Rugadh Bateman i nDún Éideann. Rinne sí staidéar ar theangacha na gCeilteach ag Ollscoil Obar Dheathain agus chríochnaigh sí PhD i bhfilíocht reiligiúnach Ghaeilge na meánaoise. Chuaigh sí ar aghaidh ansin chun an Ghaeilge a theagasc in Ollscoileanna Dhún Éideann agus Obar Dheathain.[1] Mhúin sí Gaeilge na hAlban freisin in Ollscoil Dhún Éideann agus ba Léachtóir Sinsearach Oinigh í in Ollscoil Chill Rìmhinn]].[2]

Foilsíodh an chéad chnuasach de dhánta Bateman, Òrain Ghaoil, sa bhliain 1990 agus foilsíodh an dara ceann, Aotromachd agus dàin eile sa bhliain 1997. Díríonn a céad bhailiúchán agus a dara bailiúchán ar chaidreamh daonna agus ar leagan idéalaithe den ghrá.[3]

Tá filíocht Ghaeilge aistrithe aici go Béarla sna leabhair a leanas: Anthology of Scottish Women Poets (1991), Creachadh na Clàrsaiche (1993), Duanaire na Sracaire / Songbook of the Pillagers: anthology of Scotland’s Gaelic verse to 1600 (2007), Bàird Ghleann Dail / The Glendale Bards (2014).[4]

Foilsíodh an tríú bailiúchán aici, Soirbheas, sa bhliain 2007, agus an ceathrú ceann, Transparencies, sa bhliain 2013.

Sa bhliain 2011, tháinig an chéad ghearrscéal a d'fhoilsigh Bateman i nGaeilge na hAlban amach, dar teideal Chanadh gun d'chur i às dha, sa bhailiúchán gearrscéalta Saorsa a d'fhoilsigh CLÀR.[5]

Tá sí ina léachtóir ag Sabhal Mòr Ostaig agus ina léachtóir sinsearach in Ollscoil Chill Rìmhinn.

Bhronn Oilthigh na Gàidhealtachd an teideal “ollamh” uirthi sa bhliain 2015.
