Bronnadh scoláireacht air chun staidéar a dhéanamh ar fhóineolaíocht Ghaeilge na hAlban. Ina dhiaidh sin, ghnóthaigh sé PhD san ábhar sin in Ollscoil Dhún Éideann agus ansin fuair sé post mar mhúinteoir in Ollscoil Dhún Éideann i 1993.
Bhí sé ag léachtóireacht in Ollscoil Dhún Éideann ó 1993 go 2001, áit ar bhunaigh sé Ionad na Gaeilge ("Ionad an Léinn Éireannaigh"). Bhí sé ina ollamh cúnta i Scoil an Léinn Cheiltigh, Institiúid Ard-Léinn Bhaile Átha Cliath, idir 2001 agus 2004, sular fhill sé ar Albain in 2005 le dul i mbun cathaoir mhaoinithe sa Ghaeilge i Roinn na Ceiltise agus na Gaeilge in Oilthigh Ghlaschu.
