Cuireadh oideachas air ag Ampleforth College sula ndeachaigh sé chun Stair a dhéanamh ag Corpus Christi College, Oxford, áit a bhain sé doctorate amach tar éis dó Diploma in Celtic Studies a dhéanamh faoi Sir Idris Foster.[4] Rinne sé staidéir ag Institiúid Ard-Léinn Bhaile Átha Cliath ón mbliain 1967 go dtí 1969. Chuaigh sé ansin go Corpus Christi College mar Comhalta Taighde Sóisearach agus Comhalta Staire siar ceapadh é ina Ollúnacht Ceilteach.[2]

Tá saineolas cuí aige i réimse staire agus teangacha na Breataine Bige agus na hÉireann le linn na Ré Dhorcha Gaelaí agus na Ré Dorcha féin, a tharla tar éis chliseadh na hImpireachta Rómhánaí san iarthair.

Tá sé ina Chomhalta an Royal Historical Society,[5] Comhalta an British Academy[1] Comhalta Bunaidh an Learned Society of Wales. Toghadh é mar bhall onórach d'Acadamh Ríoga na hÉireann sa bhliain 2007.[6]
