Hello all. Re. to the content translation policy on the English Wikipedia, I'd like to discuss our options here with a view to drawing up our own policy here. So, to that end I'd like to propose two changes to this wiki.
1) Content translation tool should be limited to Extended Confirmed users only. This means that editors need to be here for at least 30 days, and should have at least 500 edits under their belts.

- Bhain mé úsáid as an uirlis aistriúcháin leathanaigh 10 n-uaire anois. Áirítear leis seo aistriúchán amháin ó Bhéarla go Fraincis. Tógann an uirlis am chun foghlaim conas é a úsáid go maith. Ach is dóigh liom nach n-oibríonn an uirlis go maith i réimsí áirithe. Is minic nach mbíonn na haistriúcháin ó Bhéarla go Gaeilge go maith. Fuair mé an uirlis úsáideach le haghaidh cúpla alt íogair le déanaí. De ghnáth ní aistrím ach an chéad chuid. Is sampla é Seo de leathanach a bhí níos deacra ná mar a d'fhéadfainn a bhainistiú. Aistrím na habairtí Gaeilge ón uirlis ar ais go Béarla. Ansin déanaim na habairtí Béarla níos giorra agus níos éasca. Ansin aistrigh mé arís agus arís eile ar ais agus amach go leor uaireanta. Cuidíonn sé seo le haistriúchán maith a dhéanamh, ach uaireanta ní oibríonn sé go maith. Féadfaidh na moltaí a rinne an uirlis aistriúcháin moltaí a bheith amaideach. Roghanna eile a bheadh ann ná an t-aistriúchán a shrianadh go spás úsáideora. Nó b’fhéidir pribhléid speisialta “aistritheoir” a bheith agat a d’fhéadfaí a iarraidh.-- (c. ranníocaíochtaí 360) DeirgeDel tac 21:56, 3 Aibreán 2023 (UTC)
- Bhí mé ag smaoineamh ar na héifeachtaí a bhaineann le caillteanas an uirlis seo. Buntáiste a bhaineann leis an uirlis ná go bhfuil sé soiléir go bhfuil aistriúchán déanta. Is maith a rá freisin cé a chuir leis an alt agus cén áit ar tháinig an t-alt. Gné eile is ea nach gceadaítear aistriúcháin mura bhfuil athruithe déanta. Tá an rogha ag an uirlis foilsiú sa spás úsáideora seachas sa phríomhspás. Tabharfaidh mé roinnt eolais duit freisin. Bhí mé ag déanamh aistriúcháin ag baint úsáide as an uirlis 7 mí ó shin le haghaidh w:Alexander Nimmo agus w:Richard Maunsell ach ní raibh mé réidh chun iad a chríochnú. Tá smaointe féideartha agam maidir le w:Michael Oatley agus w:Tony Ryan a chruthú anseo go luath. B'fhéidir mar stub. Seans go mbainfinn úsáid as aistriúchán don dá cheann dheireanacha sin. -- DeirgeDel tac 22:51, 4 Aibreán 2023 (UTC)

- Along with @Alison, I vote for
- Integration with machine translation tools should be disabled for this wiki.
- If the translation tool is limited to Extended Confirmed users only, I would prefer to see tougher limits than the ones suggested above.
- I understand that senior editors like @Eomurchadha and @Ériugena may prefer to start with a machine translation first, and I trust tha they can competently clean up the text afterwards.
- To me it seems that copy pasting from the Google or Yandex websites is sufficient. Plus this allows you to prepare the text in English, simplifying sentences in English that are likely to confuse the machine.
- I hate the whole idea of translation anyway. Working with foinsí as Gaeilge, where available, is much faster and the Gaeilge more natural. The English is sometimes poorly written (see Charlotte Stoker on Simple English)
- After restricting access to machine translation, I would advise people with elementary Irish to do simple stuff (work on categories etc) and not create problems for editors in the future.
- I have spent the past few days going through some of @DeirgeDel ’s translations. It is painful and slow for me. (would be less of a burden if more could correct articles like this).
- There were significant oddities and errors in the translations of DeirgeDel, such as basic grammar (eg gender confusion, especailly in successive sentences), poor syntax. faux ami go leor (eg beaten with a bat / sciathán leathair), and so on.
- I had to read the English frequently to try to make sense of the Irish. The English is sometimes poorly written making an automatic translation even more hazardous. For example, the source article on Charlotte Stoker from the so-called “SIMPLE English” Wiki was poorly written, with redundant phrases, even complicated ones, eg ‘Eventually all Stoker's sons were to be taught at TCD’.
- Text like this could usefully be rewritten in English first for better machine translation.
- Personally I can’t spend as much time as I did over the past week doing such corrections (and I probably make errors go leor too), and I fear no one else can either.
- TGcoa (plé) 21:43, 10 Aibreán 2023 (UTC)
@TGcoa: I understand where you're coming from and I voted - Ar son on the latter, but I'm really on the fence on this one. The broader issue is that the bar is pretty high today for people to be able to contribute, and anything we can do to lower that is probably a good thing. It's a balance between maintaining high grammatical / textual standards whilst not disbarring people from contributing. The core philosophy is that Vicipéid is a wiki that "anyone can edit". I'm keenly aware of my own limitations (an Árdteist :) ) which is why I stick to complex infrastructure and Kevin Scannell often fixes my flawed terminology. So, I think there's room to accommodate all. There are very few fluent speakers in the world and setting the bar too high may exclude others who might otherwise be valuable contributors. Either way, I may yet strike me own votes, as I'll likely be the one closing this out and working with the devs on whatever the community decides - Alison plé 00:14, 11 Aibreán 2023 (UTC)
@Alison:
The "anyone can edit" principle remains very circumscribed, namely by what other editors think is acceptable, be that false or biased content or very badly written material. The latter deserves to be blanked out when it reflects badly on the Vicipéid projet as a whole, as was the case with most of Chaco's contributions, or machine translations with from people that have no ability to fix them.
I prefer more a positive message e.g."anyone can help" and provide concrete ideas about what useful things can be done, by people with only elementary writing skills... eg add photos or references, or add categories (particularly we need the years).
I still like my Coláiste Oiriall idea, that I mentionned above, of getting a teacher to work on a collaborative project with severnal students on a topic for which there are sources as Gaeilge available, and to take responsibility for the final draft. At present, pupils are thrown to the lions and asked to do an article from A to Z with, it seems no monitoring. And we don't have many, if any, editors willing to correct their output, ever.
Beir bua, Ciarán
- I do feel that 500 edits is a very high bar, and that emulating EN generally means having the highest of all possible bars, but I do understand. I only ever direct university students (or above) to the translation tool. I believe it is still possible to use the tool with these restrictions in place, but the only option is to publish it to your user space not mainspace. So that means that third level or above students interested in translation work (like the DCU students I worked with recently, with mixed results) can use the tool in this way. Review the Charter for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee
cuir in eagarHello all,
I am pleased to share the next step in the Universal Code of Conduct work. The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) draft charter is now ready for your review.
The Enforcement Guidelines require a Building Committee form to draft a charter that outlines procedures and details for a global committee to be called the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C). Over the past few months, the U4C Building Committee worked together as a group to discuss and draft the U4C charter. The U4C Building Committee welcomes feedback about the draft charter now through 22 September 2023. After that date, the U4C Building Committee will revise the charter as needed and a community vote will open shortly afterward.
Join the conversation during the conversation hours or on Meta-wiki.

The Wikimedia Foundation will switch the traffic between its data centers. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster. To make sure everything is working, the Wikimedia Technology department needs to do a planned test. This test will show if they can reliably switch from one data centre to the other. It requires many teams to prepare for the test and to be available to fix any unexpected problems.
All traffic will switch on 20 September. The test will start at 14:00 UTC.
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.
- You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Wednesday 20 September 2023.
- If you try to edit or save during these times, you will see an error message. We hope that no edits will be lost during these minutes, but we can't guarantee it. If you see the error message, then please wait until everything is back to normal. Then you should be able to save your edit. But, we recommend that you make a copy of your changes first, just in case.
Other effects:
- Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped. Red links might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual. Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
- We expect the code deployments to happen as any other week. However, some case-by-case code freezes could punctually happen if the operation require them afterwards.
- GitLab will be unavailable for about 90 minutes.

Coming soon: Reference Previews
cuir in eagarA new feature is coming to your wiki soon: Reference Previews are popups for references. Such popups have existed on wikis as local gadgets for many years. Now there is a central solution, available on all wikis, and consistent with the PagePreviews feature.
Reference Previews will be visible to everyone, including readers. If you don’t want to see them, you can opt out. If you are using the gadgets Reference Tooltips or Navigation Popups, you won’t see Reference Previews unless you disable the gadget.
Reference Previews have been a beta feature on many wikis since 2019, and a default feature on some since 2021. Deployment is planned for November 22.

Feminism and Folklore 2024
cuir in eagarDear Wiki Community,
You are humbly invited to organize the Feminism and Folklore 2024 writing competition from February 1, 2023, to March 31, 2023 on your local Wikipedia. This year, Feminism and Folklore will focus on feminism, women's issues, and gender-focused topics for the project, with a Wiki Loves Folklore gender gap focus and a folk culture theme on Wikipedia.
You can help Wikipedia's coverage of folklore from your area by writing or improving articles about things like folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, women and queer folklore figures, folk game athletes, women in mythology, women warriors in folklore, witches and witch hunting, fairy tales, and more. Users can help create new articles, expand or translate from a generated list of suggested articles.
Organisers are requested to work on the following action items to sign up their communities for the project:
- Create a page for the contest on the local wiki.
- Set up a campaign on CampWiz tool.
- Create the local list and mention the timeline and local and international prizes.
- Request local admins for site notice.
- Link the local page and the CampWiz link on the meta project page.
This year, the Wiki Loves Folklore Tech Team has introduced two new tools to enhance support for the campaign. These tools include the Article List Generator by Topic and CampWiz. The Article List Generator by Topic enables users to identify articles on the English Wikipedia that are not present in their native language Wikipedia. Users can customize their selection criteria, and the tool will present a table showcasing the missing articles along with suggested titles. Additionally, users have the option to download the list in both CSV and wikitable formats. Notably, the CampWiz tool will be employed for the project for the first time, empowering users to effectively host the project with a jury. Both tools are now available for use in the campaign. The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) is a global group dedicated to providing an equitable and consistent implementation of the UCoC. Community members are invited to submit their applications for the U4C. For more information and the responsibilities of the U4C, please review the U4C Charter.
Per the charter, there are 16 seats on the U4C: eight community-at-large seats and eight regional seats to ensure the U4C represents the diversity of the movement.
Read more and submit your application on Meta-wiki.

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees 2024 Selection
cuir in eagarDear all,
This year, the term of 4 (four) Community- and Affiliate-selected Trustees on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees will come to an end [1]. The Board invites the whole movement to participate in this year’s selection process and vote to fill those seats.
The Elections Committee will oversee this process with support from Foundation staff [2]. The Board Governance Committee created a Board Selection Working Group from Trustees who cannot be candidates in the 2024 community- and affiliate-selected trustee selection process composed of Dariusz Jemielniak, Nataliia Tymkiv, Esra'a Al Shafei, Kathy Collins, and Shani Evenstein Sigalov [3]. The group is tasked with providing Board oversight for the 2024 trustee selection process, and for keeping the Board informed. More details on the roles of the Elections Committee, Board, and staff are here [4].
Here are the key planned dates:
- May 2024: Call for candidates and call for questions
- June 2024: Affiliates vote to shortlist 12 candidates (no shortlisting if 15 or less candidates apply) [5]
- June-August 2024: Campaign period
- End of August / beginning of September 2024: Two-week community voting period
- October–November 2024: Background check of selected candidates
- Board's Meeting in December 2024: New trustees seated
Learn more about the 2024 selection process - including the detailed timeline, the candidacy process, the campaign rules, and the voter eligibility criteria - on this Meta-wiki page, and make your plan.
Election Volunteers
Another way to be involved with the 2024 selection process is to be an Election Volunteer. Election Volunteers are a bridge between the Elections Committee and their respective community. They help ensure their community is represented and mobilize them to vote. Learn more about the program and how to join on this Meta-wiki page.
Best regards,
Dariusz Jemielniak (Governance Committee Chair, Board Selection Working Group)

[3] https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Minutes:2023-08-15#Governance_Committee
[4] https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_committee/Roles
[5] Even though the ideal number is 12 candidates for 4 open seats, the shortlisting process will be triggered if there are more than 15 candidates because the 1-3 candidates that are removed might feel ostracized and it would be a lot of work for affiliates to carry out the shortlisting process to only eliminate 1-3 candidates from the candidate list.

Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.

Hello everyone,
After carefully tallying both individual and affiliate votes, the Charter Electoral Commission is pleased to announce the final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter voting.
As communicated by the Charter Electoral Commission, we reached the quorum for both Affiliate and individual votes by the time the vote closed on July 9, 23:59 UTC. We thank all 2,451 individuals and 129 Affiliate representatives who voted in the ratification process. Your votes and comments are invaluable for the future steps in Movement Strategy.
The final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter ratification voting held between 25 June and 9 July 2024 are as follows:
Individual vote:
Out of 2,451 individuals who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 2,446 have been accepted as valid votes. Among these, 1,710 voted “yes”; 623 voted “no”; and 113 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 73.30% voted to approve the Charter (1710/2333), while 26.70% voted to reject the Charter (623/2333).
Affiliates vote:
Out of 129 Affiliates designated voters who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 129 votes are confirmed as valid votes. Among these, 93 voted “yes”; 18 voted “no”; and 18 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 83.78% voted to approve the Charter (93/111), while 16.22% voted to reject the Charter (18/111).
Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation:
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees voted not to ratify the proposed Charter during their special Board meeting on July 8, 2024. The Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, Nataliia Tymkiv, shared the result of the vote, the resolution, meeting minutes and proposed next steps.
With this, the Wikimedia Movement Charter in its current revision is not ratified.

Coming soon: A new sub-referencing feature – try it!
cuir in eagarHello. For many years, community members have requested an easy way to re-use references with different details. Now, a MediaWiki solution is coming: The new sub-referencing feature will work for wikitext and Visual Editor and will enhance the existing reference system. You can continue to use different ways of referencing, but you will probably encounter sub-references in articles written by other users. More information on the project page.
We want your feedback to make sure this feature works well for you:
- Please try the current state of development on beta wiki and let us know what you think.
- Sign up here to get updates and/or invites to participate in user research activities.
Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes team is planning to bring this feature to Wikimedia wikis later this year. We will reach out to creators/maintainers of tools and templates related to references beforehand.

Glao ar Vicipéideoirí: Aiteachas a chur ar Vicipéid
cuir in eagarA chairde,
B’fhéidir go bhfaca sibh fógra faoi seo cheana ar na meáin shóisialta - tá an feachtas Aiteachas a chur ar Vicipéid ar siúl anois! Tá sé mar aidhm ag an bhfeachtas seo ábhar agus ionadaíocht LADTA+ a fheabhsú ar Vicipéid.
Dáta an Feachtais:
Tá an feachtas beo go dtí 9ú Samhain 2024.
Cuireadh tús leis an bhfeachtas i mí Dheireadh Fómhair (Mí na Staire LADTA+).
Conas is Féidir Leat Cabhrú:
Cruthaigh ailt nua: Déan alt nua a scríobh faoi stair agus cultúr LADTA+.
Nuashonraigh ailt atá ann cheana: Cuir eolas nua agus nuashonraithe leis na hailt atá ann.
Tugann d’ionchur tacaíocht do phobal LADTA+: Is éard atá i gceist le hionadaíocht a dhéanamh ar Vicipéid ná go bhfuil na scéalta, na taithí agus an stair atá tábhachtach don phobal á mbronnadh.
Déanann an feachtas seo iarracht an comhoibriú a chothú i measc Vicipéideoirí agus cuireann sé le leathnú na scéalta atá againn sa chultúr.
Mar chuid den fheachtas, tá comórtais scríbhneoireachta agus grianghrafadóireachta á reáchtáil, le duaiseanna ar fáil do na hiontrálaithe is fearr.
Má tá suim agat i gcomhoibriú nó más féidir leat cabhrú, déan teagmháil liom >>> oifigeach.gaeilge@wikimedia.ie.
Bígí linn agus comhoibreoimid le chéile chun a chinntiú go gcloítear le stair agus cultúr na ndaoine LADTA+ ar Vicipéid!
Le dea-ghuí,
Amy O’Riordan (sí/siad)
